Every year during the holidays, my partner and I bake a huge batch of cookies and share it with all of our family and friends. It's a special tradition I've kept since moving to Vancouver, as I used to bake cookies with my family every year in Montreal.
Ever since getting Bear, we've extended that tradition to baking dog treats as well!
And the best part about making your own dog treats at home? You control the ingredients going in, and your pup can share the extras with their friends!
For this recipe, you will only need 4 simple ingredients, most of which you might already have in your pantry. Feel free to use any cookie cutters you want. We picked up our dog themed cookie cutters at Michaels, which are the perfect size for our small dog!
INGREDIENTS:
- 2/3 cup pumpkin puree
- 1/4 cup peanut butter
- 2 large eggs
- 2 – 2 1/2 cups spelt flour (you can also use whole wheat flour)*
DIRECTIONS:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
- In a medium size bowl, use an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment to beat pumpkin puree, peanut butter and eggs on medium-high until well combined, about 1-2 minutes. Gradually add 2 cups of flour at low speed, beating just until incorporated. Add an additional 1/4 cup of flour at a time, just until the dough is no longer sticky.
- Working on a lightly floured surface, knead the dough 3-4 times until it comes together. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough to 1/4 inch thickness. Using cookie cutters, cut out desired shapes and place onto the prepared baking sheet.
- Place into oven and bake until the edges are golden brown, about 10-15 minutes.**
- Let cool completely.
Notes:
*Flour amounts will vary, you might need more or less
**Cook longer for more crispy, hard cookies, and slightly less time for softer cookies.
